Hi Guys
I want to check/adjust the valve clearances on my 2.0ltr CU Aircooled engine but unsure as to what I should set them:
When I purchased the van the previous owner told me it had an aftermarket cam specifically for a camper and solid lifters.
On checking with him he informs me it was of american origin "Web high torque campervan cam" and that he probably set the clearances to possibly 8 or 10 thou as in his book "a noisy tappet is a happy tappet"
I have found an american company "Web Cam Inc" who list Type 4 cams but this is the only higher torque one listed - it may or not be what I actually have
Valve Lift .465/.465
Duration 280°/280
Duration @ 0.050" Valve lift with zero valve lash 244°/244°
"Designed for increased torque with added RPM performance. WEB CAM mechanical lifters required"
Would it be acceptable/safe to set valve clearance to the Aircooled standard of 0.006" cold ??

Re: Aircooled aftermarket cam valve clearances
Air cooled tappets were classically set at 6 thou for solid lifters, but cold

Re: Aircooled aftermarket cam valve clearances
You need to know if you have solid or hydraulic tappets fitted. The CU has hydraulic as standard and the camshaft was profiled for the use of hydraulic tappets.
Cam cover off, remove one set of rockers, pushrod removed, tube removed and then inspect / extract a tappet. Then check that the pushrod is the correct type for the tappet (materials of construction, diameter)
