Well I had an Elite £900 "Rebuild" over ten years ago which failed albeit well into the warranty period due I was told, to the camshaft gear rivets failing and breaking the crankcase although they did pick the van up and honour the warranty. I later discovered that this is a known problem which is preventable by replacing the rivets with high tensile nuts and bolts.
After over ten years the Elite engine is still going strong having done numerous trips into Europe often towing a boat and using hardly any oil so on the face of it I didn't do too badly. Although I have set aside considerably more than £900 for the next rebuild and my choice will now be less governed by cost.
Well-timed silence hath more eloquence than speech.

If you were to want to consider an alternative engine, MAC VW in Manchester specialise in Subaru conversions.

Re: Engine given last rites
Elite engines are not reconditioned they just fix used ones so that they work.
Sold with a warranty they offer a quick cheap alternative.
I can also cast a vote to Andy and Simon.

+1 for Campershack. Thought mine needed replacement or removing and rebuilding so booked it in to Campershack. Andrew did a full diagnostic and it drives like a new one having had a piston, rings, liner replaced without removing the engine, they spotted a number of other potential problems and dealt with them all. Give them a ring or check the website.....

Think he only does engines now not working on vans.
Might be wrong worth asking.
