Selector Shaft Seal leaking

Post by JonB »

I have this feature at the moment, I've read a few instructions on how to do this (through the reverse light switch) but none really detail how easy it is to make a complete balls up of the job...I'm thinking no gear selection. Anyone got any idea before I either attempt it or stick it in the garage?

it's pretty straight forward, you need a tube of the right dimensions to drive the new seal into place and don't fit the golf seal only use the T25 blue one with the external spring on the outer lips which is available from JK, the gearbox must be in neutral to slip the selector shaft out, it will often be reluctant to pop out but a firm tap will get it through the seal then the old seal can be prised out with a seal removal tool leaving the inner black bush in place; I do it by refitting the selector shaft and reverse switch housing then remove the spring from the seal and with some grease on the shaft and the seal ease it over the splined end of the shaft and drive it fully home, it mates with the black bush and should be level with the case when fully home, then pop the spring back onto the seal - I do it like that as I have a specially made drift to allow me to fit it that needs the inner clearance, it is really easy otherwise to damage the seal getting it in, if you fit the seal with the shaft out then 9/10 you will dislodge the seal putting the shaft back through and repeat and repeat

Brilliant, thanks Aidan. Think I'll give it a go at the weekend.
