Head studs

Post by robinsbw »

I've taken the heads of my t25 1.9dg engine and found the head studs were 10mm mild steel studding cut to size, the original studs are so expensive I thought I could use 10mm x 1.5 studding of grade 10.9 if available, does anyone know of a source?

I have never seen anybody fix an engine properly with studding, it's a bodge.
Dig deep and get the right part is my advice.

I've obtained new studs but there's a problem? The new studs are 12mm x1.5 thread one end and 10mm x1.5 the other. The 10mm fits the engine case but the cylinder heads holes are 10.5mm dia. The dome nuts are 10mm x1.5 thread. Are the studs wrong or are the heads incorrect?

Ok! Thanks. The case holes have been drilled out to suit 10mm thread inserts at some time! Can the heads be drilled out to suit the 12mm thread or is that not possible?

I don't think that's the way you want to go, drill / helicoil or timesert the caseback to stock. or maybe just remove the thread repair that is on there now ?

The stock studs have been sent back and I've found a source for some 10mm VW studs the lengths I need.
Thanks

oh yes please!!! I have the same problem robinsbw.
I havn't tried getting the studs or inserts out yet but if I can get double ended M10 threaded studs in the right length that would be great. :D

Don't think so, type 4 head studs are very similar to WBX

Just looked it up in ETKA, air cooled head studs are M12 x 1.5 on one end, M10 on the other, same diameter as WBX ?

I think some Beetles used M10 studs, but they also had the unthreaded shank.

I've looked at this site: http://www.mecatechnic.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (vw split bus) The length of studs required are: 8 x222mm,4 x 191mm,4 x175mm. on this site there are VD85627 10MMX1.5X 193MM, VD85626 10MMX1.5X 177MM and VD85629 10MM X 1.5 X 218MM.
