Fitting main bearings to 2.1 WBX crankshaft

Post by philmcC »

Looking at the new main bearings I've been supplied with and the crankcase, it seems there is only one dowel fitted. In some of the instructions they talk about 5 dowels. A couple of the main bearings have small raised lugs on the outer surface, and how do the thrust washers with lugs fit in the crankcase. Have studied Haynes et cetera but not very clear. Any help greatly appreciated.philmcC

early case differemt thats the confusion

late case has one dowel on bearing 4 the small one at the crank pulley end rhs of pic ( dowel in other half of case)

the rest have locating tabs as you described.

3 is solid and on the crank with gears, and needs aligning as you fit
2 is split and can be seen in pic so half is already fited when you fit crank
1 is solid and slides on with thrust washer which has a slot to align it too (can see thrush washer slots top of bearing housing on lhs), again neess aligning when you fit crank.

make sure 4 is aligned with dowel, test fit other half of crankcase dry before sealing and make sure crank turns freely.

Thanks itchy, very helpful. There are 2 thrust washers with slugs. Do they go either side of the bearing with slugs pointing towards bearing?. Sorry to be a pain but I want to get it right.philmcC

yep exactly that but when you drop the crank in you just need to fit the one thrust washer on crank before bearing, the outside one can go on after case is closed, make sure it and all bearings are aligned, as said a dry fitting is best first, I have made the mistake of sealing up the case with the dowel not seated and it pinched the crank and woukd not turn.

double check cam bearings and cam sealing plug are in seen others miss those out.

I think you may need to file a locating lug off a cam bearing, the double thrust one.
