1.9dg wont idle, have to keep foot to floor to keep it going
I have a T25 1.9dg (late), after replacing cylinder heads, it does not idle anymore. I have checked for air leaks, replaced brake servo vac hose and non return valve, cleaned carb, cleaned connections, I have a video of it, its slow to start but does start but I have to have my foot to floor to keep it running or it dies? Any advice please would really appreciate it. Have set timing TDC, checked leads, plugs.

So you've had heads off, nothing else done ?
How were the tappets set.

Have you tried simply adjusting the tickover screw? How does it run otherwise, & have you test driven it?

Hi Carrera, I replaced piston rings at same time as doing the heads, and set tappets as per haynes manual, and Captain Byrne, yes I treid adjusting tickover screw screwed right in with no change at all, not test driven yet as dont want to get stuck out, it sounds fine, just the high revs, cant get it to tickover

The ignition timing should be 5 degrees BTDC

OK, so no changes to carb or distributer.
Screwing the idle screw in reduces the amount of air being let in, try winding it out a couple of turns, or better still to where it was before, if you know.
Double check your work, look for missing pipes, electrical connections missing etc.
Ian's right on the timing, but make sure you're following the right method with the vac pipes and idle stabilisation. TBH it'll idle at TDC as well as at 5 ATDC too. You can only really finally set timing when the engine is warm.

Hi Ian, Thanks for your reply,
I set it at TDC not 5 BTDC, is this likely to cause it not to idle?

Probably not on it's own but it won't help.

Inlet manifold gaskets not sealing? Been there before and it took ages to track it down.

Another way you may be able to narrow down an air leak is with a can of WD40 (no much use for anything else), sprayed around inlet ports, base of carb etc when you get engine going. It does sound like a huge air leak and bear in mind from carb to cylinder heads there needs to be a vacuum of sorts to ensure a reliable idle.
