Alternative rear brake pipe retaining clips

Post by maxstu »

Alternative to OEM types I can fit for MOT without disconnecting rubber to metal brake pipe on rear trailing arm at the mount hole?

Hi Bigherb,
Thanks for image. But im talking about where brake pipe meets rubber brake hose and passes through mount on trailing arm as seen below in this photo just above threaded rod. Pipe and hose connect through tab and are held in place with metal retaining clip. To fit clip the pipe and rubber hose need disconnecting...which lm trying to avoid. So after alternatives to OEM clips which still meets MOT.

I think the answer is likely to be no. If you’re quick there shouldn’t be much bleeding required, or are you concerned that you’ll not get them disconnected without mangling them, and then there’s the risk of a seized bleed nipple. I think there is a law of exponentially increasing jobs... it should have a name, or a meme as my phone is trying to spellcheck me!!

Hi RogerT,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, it's a combination of mangled connection, seized bleed nipples and blatant laziness on my behalf.
Nearest word(s) covering such event could be "perpetual murphy's law".
I'll see if MOT bod notices missing clip.
Cheers

I know your pain Maxstu, i recently damaged a brake pipe and had to cut it out, replace the wheel cylinder cos the union and nipple were rusted solid, cut the pipe at the flexi union and get a socket on it,I mangled the clip in the process and put in a grommet and a washer to replace the clip. I then repeated the process on the other side while I was at it. I had to split the joint to the flexi to put the grommet and washer in though so it doesn't help you much I'm afraid.

Ah flexi hose clip.
You can use the circlip type clip that fits into the slot on the flexi hose.

Hi BBB and Bigherb,
Bigbadbob....l empathise with you.Two days of solid graft on mates driveway in "pooh" weather changing two totally shot trailing arms recently. What a pig! They were so bad l cut both a few inches from mount points. Then ran a cutting wheel up beside rubber bushes to part the rusted in bolts. After disconnecting flexi to solid pipe l notice wheel cylinder had no bleed valve  Yet strangely no leaks? So new cylinder fitted from ECP and after a quick bleed all back together apart from mangled retaining clip. Hence my question kindly answered by Bigherb. Many thanks mate. Have ordered these from fleabay...

Those clips sound like just the ticket, glad you got a solution mate. :D
On the cylinder with the missing bleed nipple.... was it sheared off?

Not really sure. Reckon rusted away. Nearside backing plate very corroded and covered in road crap. Yet no sign of fluid leaking in drum area whatsoever. Handbrake good too. And old cylinder pulled straight out! Just aligned new cylinder slots to match edge of brakeshoes and popped it in and bolted up. Added solid pipe to cylinder and bleed nipple which l deliberately left slightly open, removed hose clamp ( top tool shown in action below)

and waited for fluid to run out. Nipped and added cap. Didnt need much to bleed brakes either. While van on stands replaced knackered handbrake cable too.
Never had such an easy brake maintenance task. Well chuffed

Nice one Stu. :ok
I'm having trouble with mine. Like the fool I am, I didn't clamp the flexi and didn't use the handbrake to hold the shoes apart to put my cylinder in.
I let the whole rear circuit drain down and used the auto adjusters to spread the shoes. that was a mistake.
I adjusted them back before I put the drums on but must have set one too loose, one adjusted it's self ok, I could hear it clicking, but the other didn't and I kept bleeding the rears cos it felt spongy but no air was coming out.
but now I think it's just the one loose adjuster that needs re-set. that's tonight's job.
Oh well, you live and learn. :D

P.S. clutch is fine and so are fronts, just as well cos my front bleed nipples are sheared off. :(

Now that is a bit scary :run But give me calipers and discs to refurb any day over drums..
Hose clamp is invaluable bit of kit. Other tip is to put drum over shoes one third to half way home so you can still see cylinder. But in correct position over wheel studs. Then second person press brake pedal to get fluid moving while you check cylinder slides outwards and builds up pressure. If good knock drum home and fit grub bolt. Then spanner up handbrake adjuster rod.
Also l now mark drum, hub and back plate. Then realign so drum goes on exactly as removed. Prevents pulsating brake pedal.
