Oil leak between engine and gearbox

Post by kezza87 »

Hi, my van had its first drive after an engine rebuild. I've noticed a slight oil leak which seems to be coming from the bell housing.

I replaced all the seals on the rebuild so have no idea what has happened, I may have put a touch to much oil in but not sure if this would cause a problem?

There didn't seem to be a leak before its first drive as it's been stood on the driveway for 12 months since the rebuild.

I believe the oil is engine oil as it doesn't smell or look like gearbox oil.

Any help would be really appreciated, I really don't want to drop the engine out again but Im guessing I'm going to have to.

Thanks

I've just had a thought that I can't remember replacing the ring seal on the fly wheel itself.
Do all vans have this seal and if so would it leak oil if it were missing or perished?

yes you need to replace the o ring in the flywheel all WBX have them, yes this would cause a leak, and replace the felt ring.

another possibility... many flywheels are grooved from the oil seal and high mileage, it's possible to position the seal away from the groove which may have been done before, if you didn't it my be in the groove and this could cause a leak.

you can sleeve a worn flywheel.

over fill maybe how much over filled?

Thanks for your reply.
I think I most probably did change the o ring seal but I do have a slight bit of doubt, I definitely changed the felt ring.

I have read about the groove that can appear in the fly wheel. engine had done 80,000 miles (I think) but I think this is most probably whats causing the leak.
either way I think its going to be engine back out and inspect the seals and fly wheel properly.

when I checked the oil level it was just over the top notch on the dip stick
