MV Build for spare engine

Post by 123-jn »

Well I have built a green 1.9 , a silver 1.9 , a blue 2.1 DJ so it was time for a Yellow 2.1 MV. I bought a 2.1 MV bottom end and then two AMC HEADS , Which I am building into a spare engine. I used some oild valves I had together with some new ones to rebuild the heads and have fitted new mains , big ends and cam bearings. The cam shaft was ok which is unusual!! The double thrust cam bearings needed one of the tangs ground off in order to fit as the one half of the case did not have a groove for it. I used hylomar as before to put the case together and painted it with e tech engine paint. I have used stainless nuts and washers on the original studs and stainless bolts with brass nuts in the bolt positions. The crank runs nice and smooth which is great. M10 nuts were tightened to 46nm and M8 to 22nm. I have fitted Hastings piston rings which give me a clearance of 0.5/0.6 in the cylinders. Top rings are square and can be fitted either way up so are not marked. The 2nd rings have a shamfer underneath and a small blip punched on the top . The oil control has a spring and two rails which can again go either way up. Next job putting the liners and pistons in. The pistons have a bore clearance of 0.03 which is the lower limit. Bores have been glaze busted by Halesowen engines.

Hope the link works.

An interesting thing I have discovered is that I have obtained my gasket sets from two different places and there is a difference between the cylinder head compression seals from each place . Two of them were bought singly Victor Reinz packets, two of them came in a victor Reinz head set but The two in the head set are thicker than the other two? You can see 4 sandwiched layers of metal in the ones from the head set whereas the singly bought ones only have 3 layers. Both theorectically the same manufacturer/supplier? I will mic them up and see what the actual differnce is.

Engine now complete , heads put on with reinzosil and torqued to 54NM in 3 stages. Oil pump (new one) fitted with new gaskets and nuts coated in sealer.

Just to put the tape over the orifices and store with distributor drive, rear thrust washer and pushrod tubes (scat big mouth telescopic.) Tappets can stay in oil bath until required.

I'm sure 50 would be just fine but my torque wrench is a bit old and I'm sure the spring is not as it should be, one day I'll test it. So I went for what felt right. I know that sounds stupid but you get a feel for when things are right. Sometimes if it doesn't feel right I loosen off a quarter turn and torque up again. It doesn't help that the studs are 8mm with bigger thread . They wind up and make torquing more difficult I think.

Build finished all together lots of assembly lube inside, Plugs in to stop anything intruding and rag in the inlet ports. Now to wrap it up for when I may need it. Jolly good.
