DG/DJ Spigot bearing

Post by trundletruc »

I am just about to get my 1989 2.1 DJ engine rebuilt and am a bit confused as to the spigot bearing set up.
Looking through the hole in the flywheel I can see three sizes of bore gradually getting smaller. The 21mm in dia. spigot bearing I have, will not go through the flywheel. Presumably the flywheel has to be removed to put in a new bearing?
Should there be a felt oil seal just behind the flywheel? The Bentley diagram shows a spacer, what is this? Is there something that holds the felt seal in or does it just get clamped between the spigot bearing and the flywheel?
Could the second level of bore, I can see, be the remains of a previous spigot bearing without the rollers? because the new spigot bearing will certainly not fit in here as it is smaller than the hole in the flywheel.
The third and final bore goes into the crankshaft quite a way, is this just for grease?
I don't really want to take off the flywheel to have a look, as the engine is going to the rebuilders soon and they will remove it anyway. Just curious as to how everything fits?

yes flywheel off to remove/ fit bearing into crank

the felt ring is held in place by a small metal sleeve pressed into the flywheel

yes the crank is drilled deeper than the bearing so the input shaft can protrude

pics coming

the engine is going to the re-builders soon....
I posted on another thread about VW WBX engine re-builders. It seems there are more around than there used to be.
Just out of curiosity, which one are you using?
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

Thanks Itchyfeet. I would like to send a photo but it keeps on saying the file is too big!!!! It would appear that the sleeve is missing? Does anyone know where a new one can be obtained?

you can't buy them, you might be able to buy a second hand flywheel, they can be removed and refitted by tapping out with a socket of the right diameter otherwise you would need to have something made

you can use the sealed spigot bearing from another VW.I think its a fox and the bearing is slightly bigger and you have to drill crank out for extra depth but possible.

worth checking the seal surface on the flywheel , I have fixed them with modified speedi sleeve, not sure your rebuilder would do this?
