Engine wouldn't idle, now it won't start

Post by henryb »

After rebuilding my 1.9dg petrol engine (1989), started it up the other day, it ran ok apart from you had to put foot on throttle otherside it would stall, the next day was going to check tickove, but it would fire but not keep going. Have checked plugs fuel is getting through and checked HT leads, are ideas what I could try next please,

The link tells you how to manually set timing approximately right.
good enough to start it then use a strobe.

best way to check coil is pull the king leak from dizzy cap and hold with insulated pliers or electricians gloves by the body or earthed point, say 1mm away and get a helper to crank the starter, you want to see nice blue sparks.

be careful insulation on gloves or pliers must be good.

Alternatively wrap something 1mm thick around the end of the king lead but level with end to give the spacing from earth and then rest the end of the lead on the engine so you don't have to touch it when cranking.

You might want to start by checking if there is a spark at the plugs before working your way through the rest of the ignition system. Just grab a spare plug, hold it so the flats are to earth and get your helper to crank the engine over. If you don't have a spare plug you'll have to remove one which just makes the test noisy. Try not to have the plug close to the spark plug hole, not normally an issue on the T25 though.

Engine starting basics, you need air, fuel and a spark at the right time. :) The air isn't usually a problem, so see if it's fuel or spark first.

Cheers 937 carrera,

Will be going to have a look after work later, the timing seems spot on, so will double check spark

Thanks

Tried to start it again yesterday, it backfired, but didn't start. checked the spark plugs wet with petrol, checked battery again 12v, cleaned carb jets and cone filter, not to sure what to try next?

The engine could be " flooded" take plugs out warm them to dry off leave them out for a good bit then try with out any throttle, good luck. Nothing worse than having to go to work waiting to get back wondering whats wrong with it.

Thanks Paperhouselad, will try when back from work, yes annoying having to go to work when rather be doing camper, but thats life :D , be worth it in the end, racking my brains as to what it could be, especially as it did run last week (but had to keep foot on throttle), and now this, will keep you posted, Hi Carrera yes I checked yesterday afternoon, there was definately spark at the plugs,

Cheers
