New engine... put the same one in?

I may we’ll need a new (recon) engine for my T25.. early case, 1985. DG, 1.9. Coming round to the idea that it is best to go this route than worry about working on my original unit. VW Heritage have stock , and are more expensive but have a 2 yaear warranty that no one else does (any experience of these Premuim units?)

Question is, do I need an early rather than late DG? Does the mount to the gearbox change? Or perhaps something else I haven’t thought of, like the Piesburg fitting? If not, I imagine the later model would be better as they must have improved it?

Many thanks,
Adrian

all WBX engines are interchangeable, all sizes except the DF ( which had different water pipes, carb, inlet manifold and heads)
all the bolt on bits of all the other wbx engines ( DG,DJ, MV, SS, DH, ect ) are interchangeable, including early and late

it IS worth going for a 2.1 and bolying all your dg bits on, and its also worth changing the vans cooling system to the late one if you can afford it , as the early water system is "awkward" to get parts for , some parts obsolete , like thermostat housing for instance .

Most are exchange
Worth asking if you buy a 2.1 do you have to retun a 2.1
you might get an extra charge if not

Not strictly correct, Adrian, as I give a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty, I just don't have one ready for you atm.
Also you might want to check what's meant by "Premium" with the VWH/SSP/MCT unit. (I'd be interested to know?) To me that suggests that only premium brand parts are used, more parts are replaced with new, and more attention to detail in the build. If that were the case you might expect them to state exactly what goes into each engine, but they seem rather vague in that department.

The 2.1 DJ/MV is a good upgrade using the majority of your existing coolant system and ancillaries. I'd recommend that for the least pain.
Golf engine upgrade can become expensive (wiring loom, exhaust) and you need to be pretty experienced.
