Making a start

Post by philmcC »

I have managed to do a few hours stripping down the 1.9 DG engine I bought off eBay. Quite a few horrors, but I expected that and this is only a project which may or may not develop into a restored engine. Sorry for no pics I will try and reread how to attach via Flickr. Cylinder heads look good, original VW no cracks valve guides okay valves okay can quite clean. Four cylinder head studs snapped and the rest corroded. Liners came out okay removed all the nuts and bolts to split crankcase unfortunately one had previously been tampered with and sheared off so will attack that with a drill tomorrow. Really enjoying it .philmcC

Sounds interesting.

I find the TapaTalk app works well and works fast for uploading pictures.

Soaked in plus gas, then heated with roofing blowtorch, cooled with plus gas, heated again with blowtorch applied candle for melted wax. Then impact driver to loosen, lastly breaker bar. So far so good. All the studs are corroded some badly.

Struggled with getting all the cylinder head studs out 14 so far 2 remaining. Unfortunately they are in the corner and have broken off leaving a short stump. Tried welding 13mm nut on. Anything bigger then you can't get a socket round it. Every time I've tried (3 times) I feel it's just about to go when the nut shears off. Very frustrating. Next time I am going to remove a segment of the nut so that the weld can be at the side as well as the top. Any ideas?. I don't want to have to drill them out. The studs are incredibly hard and the width of the stud thread quite big. Anyway today I took the crankcase halves and cylinder heads for vapour blasting to cheer myself up!. Will post pics when I get them back.philmcC

Marco Mansi wrote:OK this is how I do it I get a high-grade long M 10 bolt and grind the end to a point, then clean the snapped off stud as good as you can ideally blast it to get the Metal showing and nice and clean, place the sharpened bolt on the snapped stud and mig as good as you can around it, and try to remove it you may end up doing this process 10 to 15 times

Assembling tappets after disassembly and thorough clean. Much more fun than trying to remove cylinder head studs!.
