Fuel Pump Push Rod

Post by Dhammadad »

I can't find anything like a guide to replacing the push rod. Is this because it's extremely simple? I don't really want to try fitting the new one without hearing these "....don't forget to...." comments.

Anything I need to know?

easy

as long as you have a new fuel pump gasket ( preferably 2), just undo the two M8 nuts, pull pump off and lift out pushrod, if it's flush just turn over engine until it stick up and use pliers to get hold of it, new one goes in flat end at the top, clean up gasket surfaces, new gasket, refit pump...job done, no need to split fuel lines.

The reason for two gaskets is the spacer may lift off and then you want to replace that gasket too, both the same, usually spacer is stuck fast.

You can use a smear of sealant if you like.

I would check / replace the plastic pedestal too as it can bind on the pushrod when the engine is hot.

Have a look at this youtube video, about 1 minute in.

The pedestal breaks quite easily so don't over tighten (like I did) the nuts

Changed Push Rod / 2 new gaskets ( '88 DG ). Loads of thick black goo in there. Normal? :)
