Noise when turning point right...

Post by Dhammadad »

Just been in a relatively long drive and after pulling up and taking a right turn heard a noise (in time with wheel turning) and coming from left hand wheel (front). Can't tell whether it's bearings or something else. Any ideas?

Sounds basic but: Check your wheel nuts for tightness. Look for marks on both sides of both tires in case something is rubbing. Then jack the wheels off the ground and check for play in the bearings. And while you are at it give each wheel a spin while the steering wheel is held on full lock. Remember that the inside wheel deflects more in Ackerman steering geometry on full lock so it could be the other wheel. Or it could be the brake anti squeal shims or dust covers rubbing.
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ackermann ... g_geometry" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Wheel bearings can be a bit tricky to diagnose if there is no looseness/rattling when not on the road so make sure before changing.
When I was ailing I took the MOT chaps word for it on my Frocus and he changed the wrong one Do! :roll: .

Thanks....oddly it stopped after starting him up again after a few days. Then when cruising along it felt like I was driving on the are shoulder "...brrrrrrrr..." Until I turned the wheel (left) this time, then it stopped until I straightened up. Parked up for fuel and guess what....

...it's gone again now??

Huh?

I had a nasty noise from the front nearside once. It turned out to be the water tank filler tube rubbing on the tyre when near full lock. Sorted with a cable tie.
