Bought a DJ engine for stock...

Post by silverbullet »

...and its telling a tale!
First of all, I was stone cold sober at all times and wide awake when making the purchase, so no accusations are being levelled whatsoever!
Here's the cautionary tale:
So, I bought a DJ complete with efi system, loom, speedshop exhaust, recent injector refurb etc etc and the price was good.
Seller declared that it had developed a knock, but was a daily driver, so it was coming out to make way for a Subaru.
Fair enough, all up front and its an early suffix B case that had been re-coded, possibly a DG originally.
So what did I find on stripping it down?
Well, all the head studs released with a satisfying "crack" so were all holding torque nicely and it has got DJ pistons, but oh boy it has been subject to some interesting repairs...ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Perished fuel hose just waiting to let go, M10.x 1.5 studded rod installed with helicoils to fit the case (no harm done), one little end bush has walked out of the rod a few mm (no pic) and all the nuts and washers are wrong or doubled up so its been reworked and rolled in glitter (from a rattle can)

Heads are the usual cracked mess too.

But...its a good case that I can see, the waterjacket looks really good, its got a triple pulley, and the exhaust has got many many years of life left in it.

Think I will turn it into another 2.5 ;)

It's had a rough re-build then.
could have been worse though and as long as "no harm done" and it was going to need another re-build anyway to sort the knock.
Hope you don't find anymore rough stuff.
I'd love to do a 2.5 but apparently we have to go to Crete this year and stay in a hotel.....
so bang go the van funds. :(
The DG will have to hang on in there a bit longer, leaks n all.
