Valve cover issues

WBX 2.1 DJ Auto 1989
fitted a new cover and cork gasket to each side and both are now leaking far worse than before! I mean dripping instead of a bit of moisture around edge.
Ive had these parts in my garage for years so cannot confirm age or supplier. How can l visually confirm l have the correct parts suitable for my engine? And which way round do the rocker clips go?
Thanks
Stuart

Had this before, remove gaskets and remove oil or get fresh
Grease dry gaskets then fit works for me.

just see clip orientation in this pic

New springs will help too. :ok

Cheers Paul. Thanks for photo. Will remove and grease. Ever used a sealant in this area?
Also lm concerned l was supplied covers not suitable for WBX engine. The clips were loose enough to pull and fit by hand. Normally l have to use a screwdriver with rubber pipe on its shaft.
....one for the out of context forum.....or perhaps get new clips?
Stuart
:ok

Agree! :ok
And that's made me think covers are not correct for WBX range. I know they are compatible with a vast range of engines though. Might get new as a precaution. But likely springy clippy bits are knackered too.
Nice sounding exhaust btw. 8) No issues whatsoever.

All advise is spot on. Don't use 'sealant' though. This is because its not as effective and you run the risk of small traces blocking oilways. Main causes (usually) are warped covers and tired retaining springs. If they're any good, they should be damned difficult to pull back up. If they're really easy, get new clips.

Cheers Covkid, and note no sealant in this area.
Thanks

Both are still leaking despite copious greasing and knocking about with a rubber mallet and rebending clips. Will order new covers, spring clips and gaskets.
Lastly, just out of interest, if you view Paul's photo note left side cover has a slightly wider lip with a hole. My old one did too. But not replacement. For what reason? Ideal if respraying with a can though! Please enlighten me?
Thanks
Stuart

probably to powder coat, a powder coating plant required parts to be hung on metal hangers.
Brickwerks
thin smear of greace

On my air cooled beetle always applied a really thin smear of sealant, only the best quality stuff though.. and a very thin coat.. never leaked..
Not had the van ones off as yet...
Looks like the same gasket as well..

Hi leelee,
Thanks for your input. And same here. Never had any such problems with my other 1.9 DG in ten years. Always very straightforward. A bit baffling really.
Cheers
