oil out of exhaust

Post by henryb »

I have a t25 1.9dg (1989) petrol, and had problems with oil coming out of the exhaust, got the engine out taken pistons out and barrels, the pistons are pretty black. Got new piston rings to go in, is it possible there could be oil coming in from the cylinder head valves? Been told they haven't got any seals?Any advice please,

Hi David, we got the engine out now so no video unfortunately, it was smoking a heck of a lot, the oil is coming out of the joints in the exhaust, probably a saucer full after been running 20mins, the pistons were black, no coolant leak and it didnt overheat

Thanks Itchy, we got the pistons out the rings are all ok, we got a new set to refit, we got the heads off, the valves we were told have not got no seals in on our model, would that be right? if it is worn valve guides is that easy to put right,

Cheers

no seals on valves, check play by removing cotters and lifting valve to be level with guide ( I made some bracksts to hold them there) then measure play, some pics to illustrate

Not sure how it goes with horizontally opposed engines but my experience with upright in-line engines is that worn valve guide seals whether rubber or not will show smoke after pickup from the over run particularly if using engine for retardation down a slope. Baring head seals or cracks I guess smoke all the time is more likely to be pistons IMO - But oil in exhaust...
My WBX uses oil if I fill it to the top mark on the dip stick but when it gets down to the halfway mark it takes ages to go down any more. I do wonder about the length of my my dipstick though! (Smutty language alarm sounds) I wonder if there is a measurement from the correct oil level to the sump taking the angle of the dipstick into account of course.

Replacing valve guides is probably best left to a machine shop.
Old guides need pulling out over size guides are purchased the hole reamed then new guides fitted, it take some skill most of us don't have.
spec is in Haynes 1.3mm springs to mind but I don't have my haynes to hand.

There should not be so much oil in the rocker area unless you regularly park on a steep slope or are over filling?

Maybe, depends on your budget and how long you can wait, new are quite expensive, over 300 and good second hand are getting hard to find.
