New whirring noise

Post by peteinnit »

Hi all,
Apologies for not the vague heading!

Currently driving in Spain and have noticed a faint low whirring in 1st and 2nd gear, it's probably there in all gears, but road noise covers it. It sounds to me like something may be dry and need lubricating but not sure what. It only happens when in gear so think it's drive related. I've checked the drive shafts and all the rubber gators are in good condition and the gear box oil was changed recently. I can't see anything else that needs lube, so wondering if anyone has any ideas?

Probably not much I can do whilst on the road except listen for it getting worse, but would help if I knew what it might be.

Cheers,
Peter

Can you feel it through the clutch or gear lever ? Dip the clutch while running, does it go away ?

Ian

P.S. The last time I had a 'whirring' sound it turned out to be the bearings in the water pump. Ran the engine and stuck my stethoscope on the pump gland and there is was.

It's only when gear is engaged, dip the clutch and it goes. It's also more pronounced on acceleration, take foot of the gas and it seems to go as well. Just driven 200 miles and it sounds the same. I'm actually starting to doubt myself and maybe inventing a problem when it might just be the normal sound of the gearbox. Just seemed louder yesterday and this morning though..

I'll just have to keep listening for any change now I'm attuned to it.

I have the same gearbox in one of my vans and its noisy in first and also a little bit noisy in second, just the gears wearing out slowly.
