Stubborn Gearbox drain plug.

Post by AngeloEvs »

Time to renew the gearbox oil but the last time I did this I gave up trying to remove the drain plug for fear of damaging the casing or thread. I ended up sucking the oil out using a suction pump. Apart from plus gas which may or may not help any other tips and has anyone ever damaged the thread or casing trying to remove a well seized drain plug?

with a good fitting tool as long as the sides don't splay on the plug you can use a really long bar to get the necessary leverage to break the corrosion's hold, I have had some I couldn't undo because the plug splayed but I have always been able to get them out when the case is apart so I don't think you'll damage the case, heat helps but obviously in the van fuel lines and other things to consider and access not great, removing the linkage at the back helps with access for getting in with bigger bar
