Recently bought a jx doca and it smokes badly until it warms up (white),no smoke when hot and just passed it's mot, pump shot ?
Also once hot and left for an hour the glowplug light doesn't come on and it won't start unless the cold start lever is pulled.
Any advice apart from fitting a tdi ?

Smoke could be your injection pump - see Baxter's post here. You could try picking up a second hand pump, or pull yours and send it to reg cheeseman to overhaul it.

Glow plug issue sounds like glow plug temperature sensor first port of call, then glow plug relay second port of call.

Thanks for the info, I'll remove the pump and injectors and let Mr Cheesman do his stuff when I give the jx a good service at the end of the 'syncro season'.
I'll peruse Bentley re. glow plug problem.

Bentley doesn't cover the JX as it was never sold as an option in the US.

As all the cold start lever does is to advance the injection a bit, it sounds to me like it's just a bit retarded. That would account for white smoke on startup too. I've cured white smoky starts on a few engines by advancing the injection.

So my advice would be to check the timing properly. It's a whole lot cheaper than sending your pump off for a rebuild, and might cure the problem.

That's good. In addition, you could try this if you want........ Mark where it is now, so you can get it back to there again, and try advancing the injection by a small amount. See if this has any effect on the smoke. If no effect then it's not a timing problem. If it helps then try a bit more until the engine sounds just bit too harsh and dieselly, then back it off a bit. Only small adjustments are required.

My son's V70 responded well to this, even though the initial setting looked spot on.

^ WHS. Advance the timing a bit and see if that sorts it.

Any JX of this age, even if not irretrieably worn out, is likely to be lacking in proper servicing. It could quite possibly benefit from a new timing sprocket and belt, and also having the valve clearances re-shimmed.

I too am new to the JX, (Yank in Germany) and my 89 DOKA used to smoke a little on start up, cleared up in about 1 minute. I blew a rear camshaft seal on my way to the Isle of Man and had to get a local Manchester garage to change the seal and replace the belt while in there. Bus runs great but the smoking has increased since the repair and I was thinking "what now?" but this thread has given me direction to pursue before just swapping in a 1.9 AAZ. Eventually I will but I'd rather it be one my terms.
