Just about to order refurb kit from Brickwerks and they advise to check on the pushrod size as early carb models were different length to later models.
Is there any way of determining the likely push rod size without stripping down the carb ?

Yep - take a look at the body of the accelerator pump. Easy to see, underneath the fuel inlet spigot. The Brickworks page for the rebuild kit shows the location, and the difference between the long and short versions.
The longer version is the more common apparently, and I've never seen one with the shorter body. If you measure the body of the pump, the 19mm version has a 29mm body. I expect the body for the 13mm version is 6mm shorter.

they have pics of the different body lengths, you should be able to tell by comparing yours, if in doubt post a pic of yours and we can tell you.

Made a start on cleaning up the carb. Noticed there was no fuel filter in the inlet pipe. Probably why so much crap was is getting in and rough running.

That inlet filter is your last line of defence. The first line should be a filter at the outlet of the tank (like this), which would normally be a finer material and would trap whatever that inlet filter would do, and more. I can't really see that the inlet filter is too important provided the tank outlet filter isn't torn or missing, except maybe if your fuel pump or fuel hoses are old and decaying, in which case you'll have more serious problems.

Thanks for the tip CJH, I've got replacement tank filter to put on too
