Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

what engine DF or DG

Post by Wear Sunscreen »

What are peoples views on changing a DF 1.9 for a DG 1.9.
What are the pitfalls, if any, of this slight upgrade.

Easy upgrade, giving a little more power .
Better upgrade would be a 2.1 DJ .
You will need different water pipes , DF metal cross pipe is different to aDG metal cross pipe on early water system
And other that the carb , inlet manifold and heads everything else that bolts on is interchangeable

Thanks for the info, has made my mind up as to which way to go. Might even upgrade my carb if I can find one.

just to clarify , you cannot use the DF carb on a DG, or any other WBX other than a DF

I think it’s something about capacity of cylinders different so air fuel mixture requirement has to be too. Have a wikipedia read up on the principles though, to be sure.

Cylinders are exactly the same. The differences are in inlet manifold size, valve size and camshaft timing I believe. Power goes from 50hp to 78 hp, but there is only a very slight increase in torque. Torque is at the bottom end, peak power at the top end, torque is what you need to accelerate, power is the amount of work that can be done (so think of acceleration vs top speed).

Bigger valves in the DG mean more airflow, which means more fuel required. In principle you could use the DF carb, but it would need re-jetting, it's therefore just seen as being easier to swap the inlet manifold and carb over.

I have a DG van which had an engine swap to a DF. It's a hybrid as it still has the DG inlet manifold, but with a Webber carb. I have no idea what power it actually develops, but it runs well enough :)
