Repair 1.9DG then sell, or sell as a project?

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

Repair 1.9DG then sell, or sell as a project?

Post by neal.andrews »

Hi guys

My 1.9DG recently lost power (low compression in cylinder 4), so I've decided to bite the bullet and convert it to a Subaru EJ20, as a good engine and RJES parts have become available.

The conversion is being done this week, and the installers are happy to drop the 1.9DG to a local engine rebuilder if I want, then store it until I find a buyer.

The 1.9DG was actually a reconditioned unit that was installed 3.5 years ago, that until last month was a great runner and never missed a beat, and has many new or very-good-condition ancillary parts. My garage are 90% sure it is just a burnt valve, but obvs can't be sure until it's taken apart.

So my options for the 1.9DG are either fix it (hopefully about £500 in labour and parts), or sell it as a project.

Stripping it and selling the parts separately is not really an option for me.

It potentially also comes with a gearbox out of a 1.6 diesel (which was sold with the EJ20).

What do you think? If I did sell it, what are the approx values for the different options?

Cheers

Neal

You could break it down yourself and sell the usable parts (please at least try this), that would be the most interesting and you'd gain some knowledge along the way. You won't make your money back on a rebuild carried out by someone else. It won't be ~£500, believe me.

Cheers, Pal.

I would absolutely love to do that and learn more, tbh, but I don't have the tools or knowledge, or space to do the work or store it.

Nice one, Max. Nothing in my inbox yet, though. I'm on neal at gmail dot com if you want to PM there.

As a guide I recently bought a running 2.1 inc all the injection bits for £500 so think long and hard before shelling out that sort of money for a rebuild just to sell on.
