WBX MV/DJ oversized crankshaft bearings

Post by Deberius »

Hi everone,

I have to apologize, that I was a longtime reader in this forum....
My Name is Oliver from Vienna, Austria. I will make an official dokumention of my complete restoration auf our syncro (photobucket drives me mad), as I'll have to upload all my pictures to a new host, which I have allready located. But lot of pix take a lot of time...

Now to my problem:
My MV is completely disassembled and it is waiting for its rebirth since May. The crankcase has to be line bored (hope that's the right term) for new crankshaft bearings. Crankshaft itself is in perfekt shape and doesn't need any preparation.
So I would need oversized Bearings (+0.5mm/standard) for an oversized engine block!

Many german and austrian suppliers say on their websites, they should be in stock, BUT they aren't! Even (+0.5mm/+0.25mm) are not available any more....
I know that here is a collection of some geniuses about the WBX. Where do You get the bearings?

It would be very helpful!!!!

Many greetings from Vienna
Oliver

Try emailing sales@brickwerks.com

They list 0.5o/s but also for 0.25 u/s reground crank, they might be able to get what you want or these and you have to regrind the crank.

https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/t3-parts/e ... x-all.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Another option is to look for a new case.

Hi itchy,

thanks for you very quick reply. You have been one of the geniuses I've been hoping for...

As you mention to regrind the crank for 0.25 undersize, is what I didn't wanted to do. Of course, if there is no hope, I'll have to...
Unfortunately is this bearing also sold out by the moment. One very recommended german supplier told me 7 weeks ago, he could get some within 4 weeks.
But I'll give it a try on Brickwerks (hp says: out of stock)

A new case is far to expensive (between 2500 to 2900€) .
As matter of fact, that most of used 2.1 WBX cases have to be line bored.....
If I would have known that before, I would have made an engine swap, but I already spend up to 3000€ for spare parts on the engine. I have gone to far for return....

cheers Oliver

Why do they have to be line bored?
Who told you that?
If most were line bored there would be demand for the bearings and supply

Because they are usually shagged, that is why a lot are built into DG cases which didn't hammer the bottom end so much and there are more around in good condition.

Well, my engine has approx. 175.000 miles on it. The colour of the case right at the studs of the main bearing is greyish (one main indicator). Unfortunatly I don't have pix of my engine...

I got this one from Martin Blank:

Image

I brought it do an engine builder. He said it has to be bored. Actually we would need only 0.25mm oversize boring. But the steps for oversize bearings are 0.5mm.

Especially the MV and DJ like to get out of shape by splitting it. In german forums quite half of the engines had to be bored.

Conclusive to this, it is the main reason, why you can hardly find oversized bearings.. All are sold... :(

I have a line bored case in that I've been trying to get +0.5mm/STD bearings for. I tried everywhere, and discovered they're NLA. Only choice was to fit a -0.25 crank, but I only had standard cranks in stock, and there's no way I was grinding a perfect crank just to match the available bearings! The answer was...buy more cranks! I got another load of good core, and in there were 2 lovely reground to -.25mm 1.9 and 2.1 cranks. Zult! I have the case, the bearings, the crank and a decent cam, so I'm gonna build it up as my loan engine for use whilst I'm building folks their lovely standard ones. No line boring here, until it's absolutely necessary!

So you mean: Grind or not to grind, that's the boring question....

But it is even hard to get the +0.50mm/-0.25mm-ones. Just like the oversized... or do you have some?

Before I don't have them in my hands, I don't look for other cranks.

That's a brilliant solution Campershack - having a loan engine to put into someones van whilst theirs is being rebuilt :-)

My van is going to be out of action prob until at least the end of the month (rebuilder has started to put a new one together for mine :-), but has other work he needs to finish 1st (1st in - 1st out :-), & friends visiting from abroad next week - prob past Busfest & into middle of Sept before going to be back in the camper - looks like the Scudo is going to be pressed into service getting us to Busfest after all (might have to hide it in my drive away awning - at least its big enough ;-)

Saying that i'd rather have a good job done on my engine, than rushing it & something go wrong (i've been too depressed & skint to have a new engine built until now - had to sell a kidney ;-), - might have been a bad omen having the new engine have its maiden run to a show when her engine blew on the way there last year last year - might have been tempting fate.

Sorry, I only have one set on the shelf for this build.

VWHeritage have them. Or a bit cheaper, Custom & Commercial say 3 days.

Hi Bigherb

Is what you're saying the 2.1 bottom end gets hammered (as opposed to the 1.9) due to the additional torque - i'm double checking my understanding (as my 2.1 blew a conrod without warning (I had been doing quite a lot of motorway & fast A road driving trading up & down the country at shows last summer).

I'm getting a 2.1 rebuilt rather than fitting a 1.9 engine which it was originally, but that was knackered when i bought it & only lasted a few years before I replaced it with a reconditioned 2.1 running a pierburg carb). My van is factory high top with camper interior, so the extra torque comes in handy - but want reliability overall :-)
