Hello everybody.
Just returned home after an aborted trip to the Brecon Beacons. Engine (1.9 DG), which isn't the best and is pretty worn, started making loud "tappety" noise which is louder under load e.g. when accelerating or when hitting inclines. It wasn't there when we set off but I noticed it after about 30 miles. I can just about be heard with the windows up but with them down, it is clear as day. Up to then, everything seemed OK. Normally the engine is pretty quiet but produces blue smoke when first started and on overrun. It doesn't make the noise just idling so I made a video whilst driving which I have uploaded to You Tube. Does anyone have any ideas? Is it going to blow up if I carry on driving it like this? HELP!
Thanks.

Re: Sad Engine Sounds
check it's not a hole in the exhaust, typical of a hole to sound louder under load, use a tube like a vacuum cleaner tube to your ear to locate the source like a stetoscope
Had this myself once
did you really film that while driving

Re: Sad Engine Sounds
That sounds more like exhaust or manifold gasket leaking, seems too fast for tappet noise
Check all over the system with a pipe to the ear as has been said

Thanks guys. I filmed the video while the wife drove!
I did think about the exhaust but the noise sounds metallic. I'll have a good look at the exhaust tomorrow when the disappointment has been eased by wine.! My vacuum cleaner recently broke so I have a spare pipe.
Thanks

Re: Sad Engine Sounds
if its not exhaust then don't drive it, could be a cam follower fail, or big end failure.
maybe best to get a professional to look af it.
