Where to start

Post by sarahandthebear »

So the addiction has already begun we got our new van back on the drive all looks good some rust here and there first thing we did was to take the front and back bumpers off lucky no rot just rust we then gave her a clean a good look under the van and cleaned the interior next week I am going to drain the oil and change it and a new oil filter any suggestions on the best oil and filter I also want to do the same with the coolent and I know it needs a special one but can't remember which it is. It's crazy once you own one you just don't know where to even begin but it's so fun looking around d her half of our street has already been over to have a look :ok

What engine ?

Recommended coolant is pink G12 but many of us use blue ... you just need to change it more often.

Don't overlook a change of brake fluid.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

If it's a petrol engine then one of the first things you must do is replace all the fuel hoses. There's some sage advice here from Brickwerks regarding the type of hose you should use.

Add to your TO DO list:
New rotor arm
New dizzy cap
New HT leads
New spark plugs
New hoses in the engine compartment - vacuum, breather etc.

If it's a mechanical fuel pump, it may be worth replacing it and the push rod and pedestal.

All the above are really easy jobs and fairly cheap

According to its MOT history, the van failed on 12 separate faults in May this year so at least the seller has spent a bit of money on it for you to get a pass. If you haven't got the MOT certificates (some owners throw away the failure notices), you can check out the history here - it's quite a colourful story for your van! It will give you a good idea of what has been attended to over the last decade or so, where welding has already been carried out, parts fitted and and so on.

The current advisory items are :

offside rear metal brake pipe corroded
corrosion in variouos places
play in both rear wheel bearings

so you could stick those things to the list.

Have fun with the Westy, glad it's running sweetly.

This is often a sign that the MOT man doesn't understand old vehicles and/or is younger than the van itself.

I'd be more concerned about the brake pipes and corrosion.

Awesome gives us a good idea of where to start he had £500 of work done this year to pass the mot we're keeping her on the drive until we change the oil and filter the filter looks very old so needs doing and the coolent. He has had a new fule pump fitted and fule filter but it looks like the file lines under the van from the file tank to the engine are the old ones they look ok but still better get them changed to be safe the new fule pump in the engine has all new blue houses coming from it so there all new. She has not really an oil leek but a drip of oil that sticks to the bottom of the engine I'll take a picture when I can and see if anybody knows what that could be but she dose not leek any on the drive it just a droplet. The body work needs to have a few places sanded back and treated but that will be a fun job we cheacked everywhere most of the van looks solid from what we can tell if anybody is in the Warwick area and would like to come and have a look maybe see if there are any things we need to do I can send you our address thanks for all the help we will keep you updated
