Ok, looks like I will rebuild original head thanks for all advice. One more question, I assume it is well worth fitting new piston rings and getting the barrels honed?

Again your call, it depends if you think it needs it, why did you pull the heads off?
if you do you can hone them yourself a three stone tool is about 30 quid, ring compressor a tenner

Both were leaking coolant from the rubber seals. Also low compression on a couple of cylinders. Before I stripped it the two tank system at the back never worked properly. Main tank would push coolant into the overflow but it would not suck it back so had to keep topping up. Then it started leaking coolant from seals, strangely much more from newer head but on stripping head bolts were quite loose.

low compression is a reason to re ring, it could be valves too so they need grinding in.
Did it use oil?

It used a little oil. Valves are quite wobbly in the guides but had the valves measured and they fall within tolerance. So gonna fit new guides.

There is a measurement for valve guides, worth checking if they are in tolerance or not before changing, DIY changing is not so easy as it looks.

I put two heads on my old 1.9 with cracks like that, Fter 20000 miles when I stripped it to put a 2.1 in there was no discernable difference in the cracks. So I wouldn't worry. The AMC heads seem a bit more manly between the valves and don't seem to crack as much.

Many thanks for all replies, here is a close up pic of the crack for your ref, it seems to go over to the valve area......
