Start/tickover problem

Post by Hedges »

1987 1.9 petrol DG Pierberg carb
Been off road for a while whilst sorting getting ready for mot but was running ok. Needed new petrol tank, so that's replaced with new fuel etc.
Took a run out to get wheels sorted, it started cutting out hard to start and not ticking over. Done some reading up and seemed carb issue, took carb off striped cleaned and replaced with carb rebuild parts. Put back on and was running fine. Took for MOT and ran fine, although failed on a balljoint and a couple of holes. Took to garage to sort this and was still running fine, picked her up took for MOT and it cut out waiting to go in (was heavy rain that night and thought this was a cause?), managed to get in to the centre with lots of revving, passed Whoop Whoop. But on way home started conking out at low revs, now it's back to same hard to start and tick over.
Had a look tonight and cleaned idle jet and sprayed carb cleaner inside, she started running again and ticking over. After about 5mins started the same cutting out again, sprayed some more this helped but only for about another 5mins.
Any advice on this, cause, ideas etc?
Cheers
Ian

Cleaned it out the first time when stripped the carb down. Hardly been used since, suppose maybe worth another check

Took out the little cone, cleaned. Found the slightest flake in it. Started ok and ticked over... but after a couple of minutes cut out again

and you are really sure you have no vacum leaks?
choke on , strong mixyure, as the choke starts to comeoff weaker mixture, pulling extra air is noticable.???

Not sure, I sprayed carb cleaner around outside and didn't hear a change in tone if this means anything

I've had a similar issue to you and have tried a number of different things to resolve it. My problem is very intermittent, sometimes I can go for a few weeks without it happening but when it does the sympton is that the engine will cut out when dropping to idle. Never happens when starting from cold, only ever happens when the engine is warm and it's come off of it's auto choke.

First of all I sent my Pierberg carb off to Bromyard for a full refurbishment [they did a great job] seemed to initially fix the idle issue, but then problem returned after a few weeks.

I then changed all of the fuel lines from tank to engine bay and back again, along with a new fuel filter. Again problem went a way but then returned.

Then changed distributor cap, rotor arm, spark plugs and new leads. Problem still remained.

The last fix was to replace all of the vacum hoses and 'touch wood' I haven't had the issue since.

Due to the fact that there are a number of things that could cause this issue, it's difficult to give you an answer that will instantly resolve it.

Also investigate the brake servo itself is not faulty and allowing air in constantly !

Maybe I'll replace fuel pump as only about a tenner, at least that's eliminated also. Although it has had a couple of local run outs with no issues
