1.6 JX TD Engine not revving

OK, Hopefully last question.

The JX is not in and fires on the key. All is good.

Well not really.

If fires on key but will just high tick over producing a lot of smoke with zero throttle response.

I am sure I read a similar thread but as normal when you try and find it you have no luck.

Could someone give advice or point me to a previous thread so I can fault find.

I think I recall that one problem could be air in the system, is this a simple process of cracking each injector as it is running to see if it bleeds that way? This engine was stripped, cleaned and rebuilt by me and was assembled dry etc so we have connected the fuel lines to it and obviously there may be some airlocks in it. But if this fails is there anything else that could be tried.

My mechanic came and timed it all up for me so I know the belt will not be out of sync (eg tooth out etc)

Cheers

Well, what can I say.........

Got the engine installed.

All electric sorted.

All water works sorted.

Started on the key every time on the button.

But the thing just would not rev.

Let it run for a minute to ensure fuel was constant etc.

Cracked an injector to start bleed process.

Engine revs maxed out and was running full power.

No ability to shut it off, iginition off, battery off. Smoke bellowing out of exhaust engine running at full RPM.

Pulled fuel lines off and sealed inlet for air to make it eventually stall. After about 30 seconds.

End result.

Turbo ran on engine oil due to internal failure of turbo. Dragged oil out of engine.

Luckily with fast action it did not drain all engine oil out. Used about 2 litres.

Turbo off and needs repairing and engine test needed to ensure still has full compression and not damaged. Fingers crossed it is not damaged due to shutting it down before it used all the oil.

The crewcab has fallen out with me big time for taking the cosworth engine out. She just does not want the TD powerplant.

The rebuild starts again.

Well later update is engine is buggered. I am not going to open a can of work and try and repair it so new engine time.
I need a replacement engine so idea of cheapest diesel engine would be welcome.

Why didn't you just stal it? Had this on a few engines where they Rev at about 3 times the max rpm - very scary until you've stalled it.

This method will work unless you have an auto then your only option is to walk away and await the inevitable bang.

The back of the crewcab was up in the air so could not put in gear. We did stall it by cutting air off and it did not burn all oil so we thought we had saved it.

Set it up to run without turbo to fire it up to have a listen but it is locked up. Turns slowly under cracker bar but water came out of both manifolds so water in bores.

Easier and cheapest to buy a passat or golf with 1.9tdi and replace than fault find on engine and get turbo rebuilt. She really is not happy with me taking the cosworth out.

Hi
When you say 'crack one of the injectors' to remove air in fuel - what do you mean by this?
Think i have a similar problem on cold start of my JX 1.6 TD
Sorry i'm not motor veh engineer so if its too complicated i'll take it to garage

It means slightly loosening the nutted connection between the injectors and the injector pipework to let any air in the injection system bleed out of these joints, the idea being that you can tighten the nuts up again once you start to get diesel coming out of the joints.
