Flywheel change

Post by nonny112i »

This is for my 2.1 dj engine. I've just received a flywheel off Nw_vw but wasn't there when it was purchased too be sure it's right. I've got some codes here my old fly wheel has;
025 273
9c15
H00

And my recently purchased has;
025 185 273
SE7
WTR12

I've had a vernier on it and all measurements are the same etc there's just two round notches in the top of the new one behind the teeth and that's it. What's people's thoughts on checking the end float as I feel it's a bit above me but could get someone in too check it with a Dti etc is it a necessity when changing a fly wheel?? And if so for what reason again?
Cheers for any help

Deffo need to set end float if you swap flywheel or it will be tight or loose, both cause damage, DTIs and micrometers are not expensive

it's not too hard to do, we will talk you through it.

can you get some pics up of new flywheel?

the centre hole needs a spacer insert to hold the felt ring, yours was missing if I remember so thats probably the difference.

what is the oil seal surface like on the new flywheel, if it has a deep groove then you may be in trouble?

It was missing your right. Which face do you mean the one that sits up too the shims? I've dry fitted the Flywheel without the seal on too check the end float should this be ok or should I put the new crank seal on?? Cant see how it would make a difference but i could be wrong?

check endfloat without seal fitted easier to feel the movement.

this is a deep groove cut by an old oil seal and high mileage, i fitted a speedi sleeve to tbis one.

don't bother fitting the o ring or felt ring either for the test fit.

Early or late DG, might want to put your van details in your signature.

Exchange with thicker shims to take out the extra play so add to shim thicknss reduces play.

you should have one large duameter 0.4mm followed but two othet shims of smaller diameter in thd range of 0.24 to 0.38 measure them individually and then work out what to buy, you may end up like me with three 0.4mm shims.

You may also need to change the thrust washer ( pic below still on crank) which may be worn to bring the float down to where shims work.

With that much float shims may be toast but you still need to measure them as best you can to know where to start.
