Well I went down to see Peter at Wagonbuild today to get a gearbox and came back with a gearbox, two Saab 95 seats, two steering rack bellows, two track rod ends, a westey underseat tank, two window winders, a handbrake cover, some drive shaft bolts and probably something else I've forgotten, oh yeah, two rear springs.
all at good prices. well worth a visit if you're passing Inveraray or give him a shout if you're needing parts posted.
Great guy to talk to, we were there for a good three hours getting the craic, talking T25's etc and me getting some handy hints and pointers.
Cheers mate, good to meet you. :ok

Finally got time, energy and weather to swap my gearbox out today.

Measured the endfloat at 0.26mm, hmm... definately in need of shimming but i chewed the flywheel bolt heads trying to get them out. Sheesh they're tight. I gave up in the end and put the "new" box in.
Drives great, no more crunching into 3rd and no rumbles or noise.
I'll leave the shims and seals until the winter i think.

0.26 is alot better done sooner than later weld a large nut on.

I like the hole in floor and winch method, read about this before but never wanted to cut a hole

perhaps you could post up hole position for others?

I did wonder about welding something on to the bolt head but wasn't sure how far the heat would travel and what hidden damage it would do.
as I couldn't get the flywheel off I couldn't do the spigot bearing either, the hole in the flywheel is smaller than the bearing shell. the existing bearing feels smooth though. :(

Re: winching through the hole...
I figured i could blank it off later if needs be but will probably put in a blank grommet.
The hole is directly above the middle of the box laterally and 10" forward of the edge of the engine hatch. if you don't go far enough forward you risk hitting a lightweight cross member so check underneath before drilling the big hole.
I took the hook off the winch and passed the wire through then re-fitted the hook.
You can hang the winch controller down past the engine so you can work it from underneath.
The shackle goes through the heater hose clip mounting hole and luckily it's the perfect balance point for the box. you can take the clip off by reaching in from the engine bay with a couple of 13mm spanners.

The only things near that can perish with heat would probably not get hotter than in service but you should replace them anyway while you are in there.

I'd say yours definitely needs a rebuild.
Mine was crunchy into 3rd and rumbled on deceleration.
