WBXmayo

Just aquired an 2.1 which has several litres of mayo inside.

My gut feeling is it won't be possible to get all this out without splitting the crankcase and blowing / flushing through all oilways but I'm wondering if there is a method for flushing with oil pump ,heads, pistons and barrels off?

Also I assume if it was just an oil cooler fault there would be oil in water as well as water in oil, there isn't so looks like lower barrel seal to me.

thanks

pics later.

I removed the oil filter and plugged a bung into the outlet through which I pumped engine degreaser

Good idea, I guess it worked, what sort of pump did you use?

tappets would need aking appart to clean out.

how did you clean oil pickup pipe? I'm guessing not with a breadstick

With boat engines that have been sunk the usual way was to fill them with paraffin to flush them out, bicycle pump filled with same to squirt in any oilways/pipework. Finishing with flushing oil. Tedious job but was doable without a full strip down.

Afternoon, when the oil cooler failed on the MkII Scirocco (same cooler as a 2.1 T25) there was mayo in the coolant but not vice-versa. Maybe to do with the comparative system pressures ?

Thanks Ian
I did test the oil cooler today at work but it's only 100millibar test so may not show up.

Engine is on the bench anyway so heads are coming off, pointless spending time fitting it if there is doubt, I just wonder if the crankcase needs splitting, still not sure.

Come on Itchy, you know you really want to do it properly, it will keep you awake at night if you don't

Yes, I feel it's becoming an obsession, I have two more WBX engines not even finished and I'm starting another

This is damage limitation, if I don't get the mayo out it will rust internally, so I will strip it and clean it but may not rebuild it straight away.

Like the cascade in pic 2.

Do you know how long was it running with the mayo?

not sure maybe 5 or 10 miles, I was told it was smoking by the time it reached the garage where it was removed.
plugs look ok but as you can see it has got through the breather into the inlet.

my gut feeling is bearings could be shot by now so needs a full rebuild.

Clean the outside of the barrels carefully ... see if they've written 'Good Side' on any of them ... they used to :rofl I also see that they've abandoned or run out of the old blue spaghetti silicone.
