I haven't even started! Been too busy with heaters being peak season. Kilo of the stuff sat there waiting - I've got to find my big brass preserving pan to do it in as well. That's in the back of the workshop somewhere.

one of the tappets didn't want to slide out so I pushed it in, it has a burr which has scratched the bore which is disappointing.
In future I'm not pulling tappets when I split and engine I will push them in, I think the scratching was done by me trying to pull it out.

Water jacket is full if sticky brown stuff, it's not oil I think its K-seal, dunno what dissolves it paraffin won't?

Engine is dirty inside obviously run on petrol, an LPG engine is usually aluminium colour inside.

Oil pick up and sump free from swarf which is good, some more cleaning...

Quick measure up of the old bearings and compared to standard bearings and it's clearly not been line bored which is good.

I'm not sure what to do about a cam, mayo engine is a DJ and the Cam is not in great condition.

New cams are silly money at £300+ from classic ( if indeed there are any left anymore) and the gear size problem is also an issue in that what's left is unknown size.

Aircooled cams are often used but you have limited choice becuse alot are performance cams and so use solid tappets, also the Aircooled cam gears are one size so you just have to live with the cam gear noise.
Another complication is most performance cams use 1.25 ratio rockers ( standard are 1.1) which means the cam lift is less than a DJ cam because they expect you to use higher ratio rockers. So you can't just use an Aircooled cam without changing rockers too and it's all new to me.
One last point is that higher ratio rockers ideally need swivel feet adjusters its all adding up in cost and all a bit unknown

On a plus side I could get a higher lift cam and more power which has temped me to do the research and take the risks.

There is also the possibility of a regrind and s I think I need to explore that too
Andrew at Campershack has kindly shared the name of a company who can regrind and who have the the DJ cam profile in their CNC grinder

So I put the cam in the lathe and measured the lift 7.6mm, 8.1mm, 8.0mm, 7.7mm so possible OK not too much lost but the pits may be too deep, I'm going to give them acall next week.

Newmans made my 2.5 cams. Good to know that they now have the oem 2.1 profile on file.

PS brown sticky tar in the water jacket means that green coolant has been mixed with pink.
Remove with brake cleaner, even petrol wont dissolve it.

Thanks Ian that's very interesting, I wonder if they would be interested in making standard DJ cams, any ball park cost of what you pay vs batch qty?

Yep, I'd say so too :)

I heard many years ago about a process called metal spraying which can be used to recover damaged cranks / cams.

Thanks for the info, interesting I think if you had no options but there are.
my gut feeling is it's not worth it, I think I'm going to try an Aircooled cam.
Regrinding cams is never great anyway because the whole profile ends up being smaller to keep it correct and so it puts more stress on it.

This engine is for fun so may as well get some more breathing by a slightly uprated cam :D

If your car is a pretty standard road car - give the re-profiled cam a run - if you are racing - go new.

yes but I'm not sure new is really an option anymore, VWH and Coolair are both stocking reprofiled Aircooled cams.

there maybe a few odd gear sizes at classic left but then you have to drill the gear off your 300+ quid camshaft and refit yours.

Can you give any more information about this. I have a CU engine to rebuild (bodywork first though) and am pretty sure that the cam is worn (no
compression when the tappets are set correctly). Are the Aircooled ones still readily available, or are they being diverted to WBX duties ?
