If they are going to do it properly I'd bite their hand off for £700. I'll have their number.

Doesn't include removal of gearbox or touching transaxle or torque converter. I found someone who would would do gearbox and torque converter including removal for £1130 but they were vague on detail so I didn't use them. Once the box is back in and running OK I'll put the details up on here

E D I T. The garage doesn't have a ramp that can accommodate a high top so they've had to remove and refit mine outside. The gearbox specialist only accept boxes removed from the vans.

I would definitely discuss what they suggest should be fitted to give a reliable gearbox, i.e the seals etc you mention and that they then give a written quotation to that effect. And a quotation, rather than an estimate as its a fixed price so you and they know the full and final price of the job.

Better to have them and you understand just what is required for a good repair, agree the quote and get it done, along with a decent guarantee. If their work is good, a guarantee won't worry them.

I hope you get this one sorted out, you haven't had too much luck with garages of late. And I dare not ask about the shower

Got the van back today gearbox cost just over£1000. All seems good and more pull . The only odd thing is it is keen to "kick down" when accelerating even at 60mph. This can't be right, can it?

The kickdown can be altered.Please post up who did your box.

That doesn't sound like bad news, on the whole? You say it has more pull so maybe you previously didn't have the pull to change down at 60?

Whatever happens I hope this is when you get a bit of respite from you van probs.

Its got three gears, plodding around it will change to 3rd at about 30mph or 45-50 if the acceralator pedal is pushed sharply . Isn't the kickdown just the gearbox dropping the gear to second if needed. Surely it shouldn't drop to 2nd at over 60MPH?

No it souldn't do that.Sounds scarey.When I said it can be altered I meant the sensitivity of the kickdown can be altered.

Anyone know what is the maximum speed kickdown should work, I saw 55 mentioned on a US forum..

Bentley 37.17 there's a table of shift points.
It shouldn't kick down 3-2 above 53mph.
Sounds like throttle link rod too long, (or speedo reading way over!)

Thanks Andrew. Speedo is slightly out but only by a couple of MPH. There's also a noise coming from the gearbox for a few seconds after starting if its been sitting a few hours. Looks like I'll be on my not so merry way back to the mechanics yet again next week.

Took it down to the company that actually refurbed the box. They spent a couple of hours adjusting the throttle, putting right an old bodge to the accelerator where someone has fitted a speed fastener(which could have fallen off any time) instead of circlip and washer to the cable and another hour spent test driving. The adjustment was way way out. On the way home changed up and down smoothly, should be better MPG as well. As its changing at the correct time the engine is running a tad cooler. Now to leave it overnight and see how it runs tomorrow

Two companies Rob. I don't want to name the one that's messed up because I think it is inexperience and lack of knowledge rather than being twats and the company that rebuilt it is said they found a circlip broken inside that is unlikely to have been caused by poor workmanship. Although my van is late, Elite VWs final engine was an early engine and I've read on US forums that the earlier automatic gearboxes had a fault with one of the circlips so perhaps elite swapped the box at the same time. The garage tht fitted the box got a good rep built over many years so I don't want to make thngs tough for them.
I'll happily name the company that's rebuilt it tomorrow once I know for sure it's fixed. I feel optimistic because I actually gained speed on an incline on the way back and it is sounding and driving better than it ever has before. Good look underneath and really solid bar the steps that need doing when I've got the cash.
