Good point on the degradation and dumping out your oil.
Paxolin and Tufnol are both rated at 90*C continuous and 120*C occasionally.
I'd like to think there would be wiggle room there to cover the manufacturers ass but long term it may degrade at 100*C + continuous.
I might just try it first.

Don't it's not suitable oil temp can get over that , trust me loosing all your sump oil rapidly is no fun.

I was lucky it happended comming off a motorway and there was a petol station very near where I could buy very expensive oil and I happended to know the wheel bolt was M14x1.5 so wheel bolt was used as a temporary sump plug to get home with very expensive oil from the petrol station. Also as it happened at speed the oil was distributed far and wide , if it were to have happened say at traffic lights or when driving slow I may have had a cleanup bill or worse a resurface the road bill.


The engine survived and is indeed the one rebuilt in this thread so probably caused some of the bearing damage I saw.

I found that cheapo temp guages are crap and you have to buy a better one.

Just out of interest could you elaborate on "crap"
Or more importantly what is "better" about the VDO.
is the VDO more accurate than el-cheapo when dipped in boiling water? ( I'd hope so.)
does the VDO suffer from less lag when mounted in the same position?
When used as a reference indicator rather than a true temperature meter is the VDO "better"? if so in what way.

crappy one not accurate had to pull needle off and move it to get it closer
broke one of the two doing this
lag was terrible sensor/sender element probably behind thick metal

I think I have solved my problem already, not sure what problem you think I'm trying to solve?

I thought the thread was moving in the direction of insulating material to eliminate the thermal lag you have observed, but it doesn't look that way now.

No, that was just my suggestion which Paul gave good reasons for rejecting.

Lucky indeed. One of us may have spotted that the hose clamp is slightly rusty and spoils the appearance of an otherwise shiny engine bay...

At least with stainless, the fittings still look like new on or off the drive!!!

don't think you can get genuine VW spring loaded clips in stainless... oh you don't have OEM
