Chatting to a degree qualified mechanical engineer who has never picked up a spanner types today and he said you should not use a screw in sheer because the threads are a weakness that can cause cracks.

He said ideally you clamp the parts tight enough so the friction takes the rotational load.

Thanks Aidan screws arrived, they are 8.8 so would take perhaos 20Nm from what I can see.

does this sound OK to those more hand on practical engineers?

Suggested by SB so I suppose thats a pretty good indicator.

PS the difficult thing is getting the rivetting done to an acceptable standard. Its a disappearing art.
They are 6mm so resorting to a bolt-on requires M7 × 1 screws, and that makes them a special. Been there, investigated that.

Next

Scat Bigmouth, one large end one small end like the stock ones

Remind me which end goes where, I just put big end at the tappets but doesn't look right so swapped them and they seem to fit either way.

looks better with big end at top by heads?

can't find a pic of a wbx with scats on

I found a pic of an Aircooled with big end up to head

incidently google image search of scat big mouth brings up some very worrying pictures :rofl

The bigger end goes the tappet end and the smaller end goes the head end when using scat Big Mouth (unless you are using them on an Aircooled in which case reverse them).

A while back I mentioned in another thread about converting late case DGs to DJs and I said I might be able to put a kit together. Itchy asked if I had a price, so I've done a bit of research and found a few deals.
If you're rebuilding your DG anyway and have everything else new already, then all you need to swap are crank, cam and pistons. I can supply NOS crank, NOS camshaft (+3 gear so may need swapping), and used pistons with new rings for around £900.
If you wanted the full kit, everything to rebuild from scratch including heads, it's just over £2k.

Very interesting, thanks, any VAT on that or is that all in?

That's the price including vat but not carriage. It will vary slightly according to the euro exchange rate.

Btw, have you checked the retail prices
Crank £969 @ VWH
Cam (reground Aircooled) £295 VWH
Pistons (new KS) £400 BW
Comes to £1664!!
That's more than some reconditioners charge for their engines...

Thanks I will try again later

Another thing is the seals that come with them are all the same size, they need stretching over the bigger end, is that right?

Elring seals with gasket kit are too big for the big end so no use.

Yes I use the smaller of the seal sizes and stretch the ones on the big end , at least they now do nice silicone seals in the tube kits now.

Not as nice as the Elring seals, they look to be harder and almost crumbly.

This is what I was concerned about, anyway a bit of fiddling and they are not touching but are very close, better on the late head than the early head but that may be coincidence. I tried them the other way up but I think they will then probably be in danger of touching at the tappet end.

A strip of metal holding the flywheel helps loads when trying to measure endfloat :ok
The flywheel rotates as you push and pull messing up the measurement.
Dial gauge obscures the pic but there is a hole in the plate and an M8 clutch cover screw in it.
