Misfires when starting from cold only

Post by Jeff J »

My water cooled 1.9 petrol engine misfires when first starting from cold, mainly when idling but a little when the throttle is depressed also. I have replaced plugs & leads & rotor arm & distributor cap to no avail. It is fine once it's been running for a while & I can't decide whether it is just getting condensation in the distributor cap or it is something to do with the idle control unit ( I think this is the little box that 4 wires from the distributor go to). Given that a new one costs approx. £100, I am reluctant to just buy a new one on spec.. Is there any way to test them? I read in the Haynes manual that to set the timing you disconnect both plugs & connect them together. Will this prove anything?
