It's been almost 18 months and 6,000 miles since I fitted my test carb to my engine, complete with both the 3D printed parts, and since I recently removed the carb to fit a new engine I thought it would be worth taking a look at those two parts to see how they've coped with the heat of the engine bay.

First up, the choke part. It's a bit grubbier, but there are no obvious signs of ageing - the holes don't appear to have ovaled, and there's no yellowing, cracking or other signs of deformation that I can see.

The throttle part seems fine too. There's a nice well-defined wear line where it rides on the throttle cam, and it appears to be in about the same place as the wear line on an original part. The 3D printed part is made of Nylon, which is somewhat self-lubricating, so I deliberately did not oil the cam when I fitted the part - oil would tend to attract dust and increase the wear I suspect.

Again, no other signs of ageing. The DIY spindle, made from a flat headed rivet and a spacer tube, is still holding the part firmly while allowing it to rotate freely, and the part itself seems no different from when it was fitted.

I've had a steady trickle of interest in these parts (several images from this thread show up on the first page if you Google for images of 'Pierburg choke' for instance), but there are still plenty available. For the benefit of anyone who hasn't seen this thread before, I sell these parts more or less 'at cost': the choke part is £1, and the throttle part (including the spacer and some rivets) is £1.50, plus £1 postage to cover 'several' of these parts (I've not yet had an order for enough to take the postage over £1).

CJ, do you still have any of these available? It's the throttle resin part that I am now needing. The original has broken at the middle due to rust from the inside pin. Very annoying. Please PM me and I will get my details to you.

thanks!

Hi all,

I am a new member and hope someone can help me. I have trawled through all the Pierburg 2E3 threads here and hope that someone can help me get my hands on the pierburg 2E3 heated element choke control unit.

I have a 1987 1.9 automatic which is difficult to start from cold. I am not as mechanically minded as some on here and I have a mechanic friend diagnose that the problem is a broken element. I could tolerate this but on the odd occasion the engine cuts out when stationary and can be quite dangerous when pulling away from junctions.

Most grateful for any help or advice.

It won't be the heater element, as all that does is help the choke to come off sooner, and once the hot coolant circulates the element is redundant. In other words the symptom of a failed heater element is the choke stays on a little longer than it should, resulting in raised idle speed until fully warmed up. It may be that someone has adjusted the actuator to combat the fast idle, unwittingly negating the cold starting ability.

What he says ^^^ he is a specialist with these vans.

Could also be lots of other things like ignition timing, vacuum leak in dizzy, badly adjusted carb, something else in carb broken........

You should not really need much choke in this weather ( assuming you live in UK)

Don't autos have some extra electronics to control idle?

Nope.

The 2e4 has idle control gubbins which compensate for power steering and/or aircon load. Rarely seen round these parts.

It might also be worth checking there is a good fuel supply, as in its coming out in good splurts from the pump, as a lack a fuel supply caused cut outs for me when stationary, especially when the engine is hot.

Thanks for all the swift replies - As I stated I am not as mechanically minded as most of the members on here.

The issue is that the choke does not come on at all - so I have to keep revs going for a while to warm up. I purchased the vehicle just over a year ago and the guy I bought it off told me that the previous owner 'disengaged the choke to preserve the engine longer''???

I live in the north of Ireland and unfortunately do not experience great temperatures throughout the spring and summer months so it is more problematic for me. I will ask my mechanic to investigate further. He was attempting to make some carb adjustments to allow the vehicle to start better and eliminate cut outs but he seemed sure that the issue was a broken heated element choke control unit. There is power going to the choke but not working.

Any other advise would be gratefully received. Apologies in advance for anticipated questions and queries over the coming months - i expect I will be posting quite a bit.

Kindest regards
