Had to "limp" home last night

Post by monkeyboysee »

so, after a great weekend at DubsInTDales, i had a problem on the drive home, i'll try and describe as best i can.

van is a 1989 panel van, 1.7d.

I noticed on the A1 that it was slightly underpowered, particulalrly on any hills / upward inclines. On the level or downhill normal. I put it down to maybe sore knees etc until my lad wound his window down; the "engine" was making a different sound to usual, if the blow through your lips, kind of like that but defo not blowing exhaust sound?

all this time, temp running as usual, no oil pressure light etc, running around 60mph which i try to stick around.

when i dropped my lad off, i left the engine running, the exhaust was jumping a bit but defo not blowing, ticking over but something not right, no distinctive misfire etc. I checked in the back flap, all belts running ok and clean, a bit of oil on the coolant line going to the expansion bottle, and a drip of oil under the back corner. But no oil on the pulleys etc.

i'm just "learning" on a diesel, from memory i had something similar on an escort 20+ years ago, turned out to be a dodgy HT lead not always connecting to the spark plug, so not a definite 3cylinders only but similar with the ragged running?

as a bit of history, I've only had the van a few months, i noticed that it takes maybe 20-30 secs before the glowplug light goes off? there is a small posibility that i've put a little bit too much oil in recently, but only a touch, not talking gallons! Also recently i have gone right down to running on fumes before putting more fule in.

I'm thinking change air & fuel filters as a starter?
