WBX Water pump rebuild

Post by silverbullet »

Completely do-able, if you have access to the parts and basic tools.
Takes a few minutes. Remove pulley boss with a cheek puller (fit is not as hard as I had expected), warm up the body, press out old bearing c/w seal and impellor, then use puller to remove impellor from old bearing.
To reassemble:
Warm body, fit new bearing, press in new seal, press impellor onto bearing spindle (check clearance) and then the pulley boss.
Bearing £12 (old stock or universal, which needs to be shortened each end)
Seal £5
Both readily available.Image

the oem pumps have much smaller clearances so will pump more flow accoding to Marco Mansi.

its not the distance to block but clearnce impellor to pump body.

I measured a genuine VW pump it was 0.1mm and an aftermarket at 1.2mm

So rebuilding old pumps is not just for the penny pinchers but could be better cooling

or perhaps this could be adjustable when reinstalling by turning down impellor? or is the bearing in the impellor?
