Bellhousing for the UN1 is coming along nicely. Its eating manhours and machine time, but its still cheaper than tooling up to have one cast as a 1-off, which would still need machining...

Not yet, very nearly. Hit a couple of snags and had another machine breakdown, but I have now got the clutch shaft drilling done so it's close. Then rework the clutch slave bracket, drill the starter fixings, lighten it a bit etc.

Currently thinking about clutch requirement, working on 300PS & 400 Nm output to be on the safe side.

I was grilled about this yesterday, all I can say is that it's "resting" and I have only just overcome the clutch hurdle...I am going to re-work the shortened Renault one to take a 228 VW friction disc (petrol splines), clamped by a very heavy duty cover form Weddle. Apparently the standard spline and hub centres are extremely strong, they just need more clamping pressure to handle more torque.
I might try and get a kevlar faced one to raise its temperature rating when slipped, but it won't be from Black Diamond, that's for certain. I have never dealt with so-called "professionals" who were so rude and patronising on the phone :evil:

Progress! New clutch (385 lb.ft rated!) led to more bellhousing mods and clutch release mech work. I'll let the pics do the talking...ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Top suggestion from Chris Schimke at T3 Technique for fixing the clutch slave bracket (not at all easy to jig up, but its turned out well)
However, I cant use a T3 wbx starter because the coolant hose is now too tight against the solenoid housing :(
Good news is that a late Bay 091 starter fits and has the solenoid laying to the other side, so its well out of the way :)ImageImage

Hi Ian

There are at least a couple of 'high torque' starters available for the T25, and they come with a mounting flange which would allow you to adjust the orientation of the solenoid to taste. I bought a WOSP initially - the position of the mounting flange wasn't right 'as delivered', but was easy to adjust.

I actually had a problem with the WOSP, and while it was away being fixed I bought a Powerlite - that has a similar mounting flange, but with only a single set of mounting holes. You could drill more to suit I'm sure.

One of these two starters doesn't quite mesh fully with the flywheel, and I haven't determined which yet. To make it mesh fully it would mean thinning the mounting flange by a few mm. I'm sure a man of your calibre could do that, or perhaps even make a bespoke mounting flange to suit your installation.

I can't justify the cost of a WOSP on an engine that's really just an MV with a bit of extra drag on the belts!

I'm hanging on to the repaired WOSP as a spare I'm afraid. I bought it originally from a someone on here, while I was still planning my DJ build. I'd heard that the higher torque would be good for the higher compression engine. I don't know how true that is, but I do like the higher spin speed and the more 'modern' sound that these unit make.

Well thats a pity! The roller clutch on the old Bosch starter wont clear the new clutch cover...
So, I will be shopping for a reduction-geared starter after all!Image
