Can't get my Subaru swap to fire up! Help please

Post by TeflonTim »

Hello

I have fitted a EJ20 from 1997 Impreza 2.0 non turbo into my 1988 T3 Panel (Originally fitted with 2.1DJ)
The Loom was converted by RJES as well as supplying the conversion parts.
According to the guy I bought it from, the engine was a great runner with 70K on the clock. (Not buying a running donor was definitely my biggest mistake but I can't dwell on it...)

All went together quite easily but now the bloody thing wont fire. Engine turns over happily.

No error codes or immobilizer issues showing.

I have double checked that all electrical plugs "snap" together.
All earths are properly connected (and I've added an extra earth strap to the crank case for good measure)
Fuel pump is working and the flow is running though the fuel rail and back into the tank.
I have tried a new coil and crank sensor.
Double checked the timing.
Double checked the fuel feed/ return pipes are correctly orientated.

Still no spark!

I have a used ignition module on the way which will hopefully arrive tomorrow but to be honest I don't think it's that.

Any ideas would be appreciated..... I'm stuck

If you've no spark then it defo won't fire ;-) have you checked for a spark at each plug? If not there, you'll need to check the coil pack connector to see if that's getting power. There's likely a way to check for that with a multimeter , have to look that up.

Your immobiliser is active, Subaru key with its transponder in the lock barrel and turned to on? It won't fire without that either.

The timing is all detected by the crank position sensor I think, which if you've no error codes I suppose is alright.

Thanks for the reply

I have checked each plug and there is no spark.
I have had the multimeter on the coil pack connector
There are 3 wires(Red/Green, Yellow/Red & Blue), I only get 12v to the middle one (Yellow/red) with the ignition on one click. When the starter is engaged the voltage drops to 10.6.... and still at 0v on the other 2 connections.

The key is with the transponder and all seems to be fine . There are no error lights from the immobiliser LED when trying to start.

Any chance someone could have a quick look at their coil connector plug with a voltmeter and report back the findings.

Im stuck with this problem at the moment.

And my other ignition module hasn’t turned up in the post yet.

Thanks

Sorry Tim we're away camping in it this weekend ! I'd Google ' Subaru no spark ' in the meantime to exhaust all the options

Check what voltage the ECU is seeing when cranking.

Many ECU's won't play if they don't see a certain voltage, usually about 9 ish volts

Update.
The reason the van would not start was not your usual problem. I had bought an ecu/immobiliser/key set from a used Subaru parts supplier. It turned out that the ecu has sat on the shelf for many years and the pins had some surface corrosion. Not obvious to see but with a magnifying glass you could. I carefully cleaned every pin and just like that the engine fired. Very frustrating problem to track down but I got there in the end.
The van is now running sweet and I’m a happy boy.
Thanks for all your suggestions and advice.
Keep your pins clean
Cheers
