For basic stuff, just getting / clearing codes a D900 scanner I bought on ebay about 8 years ago for £15 is fine.

After that, look out for Vagcom / VCDS. It's an aftermarket diagnostic tool that replicates the VW tool almost exactly on a laptop - it's what I use.

By the sounds of it the immobilisor is cutting in. Those keys have a little chip inside the head of the key which is paired with the scanner when you put the key in the ignition. If the little chip is lost then the car will start and then cut out.

I have this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/U281-Fault-C ... 2637541378" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and I have a 2001 1l Lupo so I can confirm it works.

no imobiliser on my Lupo.

could be lots of things but the EGR valve stuck open will make it stall common fault.

As I have Polo's of that vintage I just checked with ETKA, using a 6X1Lupo with 1.0 litre engine as the vehicle type. It definitely looks like it has the same IMMO system as the Polo, and it seems there was a development / mod of the IMMO system in 05/2000.

I've had my own issues with this problem  :D - P17978 is the likely one if there's an Immo issue but I'm not sure you will be able to read that with a standard OBD reader.

There is another option - iCarSoft. These operate as generic readers and specialised readers as they come customised for particular makes of car. I have one, it's pretty good, but I don't know how capable they are for VW/Audi's - about £130 I think and regularly updated

Why do you say it's an aftermarket immo - they had them fitted from factory.

You can read my thread about the problem I had and see if you have the same issue.

https://uk-polos.net/viewtopic.php?f=7& ... 07#p542507

If the chip is in the key then it's either

1. An issue with the ring around the ignition that detects the chip
2. The key needs repairing with the ECU

I have forgotten how to do the key matching, but a search on UK Polos will probably give you the answer.

What reader did you buy in the end ?

Clifford alarm isn't standard, wish you had mentioned that before. VW IMMO2 or most likely IMMO3 is.

Is it an alarm or an alarm immobiliser. If the latter then maybe that is where the problem is, but it's difficult to tell

Did you clear the 17958 code - they don't disappear themselves ?

If you did, have you done a rescan to see what pops up now. ?

Did you look inside your key head to see if the chip was there ?

Only 5 minutes work to check all the above

With no pictures it's going to be difficult to help.

18010 is low (starter) battery voltage.

Has 17958 not returned ?

Clear the codes, rescan, try to start the car, rescan again, is anything showing ?
