Air filter options for Subaru?

Post by mariner »

Hi all. Had my van for 3 years now and haven’t changed the air filter in that time (probably done 10-15k) in that time and don’t know how long it was on before. Anyone able to tell me what the options are to put in its place? Will the universal cone filter from Halfords be ok or do I need something more specific? Thanks for any help.

Use an Apollo filter (enclosed cone) and connect to the snorkel to feed the engine cold air and keep it quiet.

Can you not get a new element to replace the filter inside your one? It looks like an enclosed filter at the moment isn't it?

Think so but no expert I’m afraid! Will remove this wkd and post some more pics up. Wasn’t aware you could just change the inside - thanks!

So this is the air filter unit. Looks as if it comes as one piece rather than being able to replace the cone. Anyone know if this can be cleaned or is it a case of replace. Cheers.

That whole cone on the left is the replaceable part, very like the k&n apollo mentioned above. No makers mark? If you can clean it like the k&n one, then it's a better setup than a generic cone filter I reckon

No maker’s mark. Have given it a clean with water and air compressor and stuck it back on. Will see how it goes but should be good.

Looks like a K&N, you can get a specific service kit for them (solvent and re-oil) as they should be regularly cleaned.

Thanks silverbullet. Having given it a clean and refitting it, I’ve found it to be really noisy! Same sort of whine I get off the fuel pump (a perennial problem with the scooby conversion, I know).

Is this just because it’s clean for the first time in 3 years and to be expected? If so, will I get less noise off a standard (open) cone filter? The filter and fuel pump together is quite annoying!

You think its noisy now? An open cone will give you a LOT of induction roar!
Been there, done that, went back to a wbx ;)

Ive an open cone on now, yes pretty noisy, noisier than the old wbxer, (but obviously much faster too ;-) I'm looking to fit a closed one like you have. Or just fit the OEM Subaru box filter. So id just clean it out if I were you. Do you have an air pipe going up the rear pillar as well?

No air pipe going up the rear pillar that I can see. Tbh, it’s quietened down a bit now. Have some new engine lid soundproofing arriving tomorrow as well so hopefully that may help a bit.
