1.9 1Y Fuel Injection Pump

Post by The Hairy Camper »

Hi people, i was removing the electrics from my 1Y engine today and i noticed that the fuel injection pump looks a little different from my original 1.7 engine.

Most of the electrics are coming off fine, but i'm not sure how to remove these wires (yellow and green one's).

I'm sure i could remove the bolt but I know there is one bolt you're supposed to leave alone on the pumps. Knowing my luck it's this one

Any suggestions?

Cheers!

Not a bolt! Long time since I did mine but I am 99% certain that I didn't use them on mine. Commencement of ignition sensor springs to mind or is it solenoid valve for start-of-injection timing? As we don't have all the electronics that go with it it isn't used.
Somewhere there is a labelled diagram of the various parts either on here or the Brickyard.
Looks like a Bosch pump - is it? I only have a technical manual for the Bosch VE injection pump.
What year is this engine - you may have a more modern engine there with different electrics to the engines that most of us have used in the past?

An old post concerning the wires:

Those wires are from the injection timing sensor, which senses the rise in pressure when fuel is being injected to any of the cylinders. It sends a signal to the ECU. If you haven't got an ECU, then you don't need to connect the wires.

Cheers Oldie, it is a Bosch pump. No idea what year the golf it came out of was (bought it separate), but i know it's a "late" engine from the engine code.

Will this pump run all right without an ECU? It didn't come with one and i didn't think 1Y's or AAZ's had ECU's?

Cheers!

I couldn't tell you, I can't find my workshop manual with the 1Y engines in to take a look. I bought a Haynes for the vehicle and year that my engine came from to have a better idea as to what was what/torques etc.

No worries Oldie, i'll try and find out what year my engine is. Do you have any pictures of your fuel pump to compare? My 1Y pump looks a fair bit different compared to the KY

Cheers Oldie, there is hope then. Did you leave the wires connected to anything? These look like the only thing holding the electrics to the engine now, so i may just snip them off?

I am certain that I just shrink wrapped mine once I had removed them from the plug.

I've found this diagram on another website, I hope they don't mind me pinching the image! The post was 10 years old so probably not

It looks like i'm looking at the "Injection Period Sender". From what i have read these are not essential for the pump to function, but the wires do/did connect up to an ECU so it could detect/regulate the pump if it is wasting fuel. Very clever, but if it is not connected the pump apparently functions fine without.

The only part that needs to be connected is the "Fuel Shut Off Control Unit" apparently.

Hope someone else finds this useful.

Cheers!

Hi folks, I've recently returned to the VW T25 fold by the purchase of an '85 Caravelle GL. A previous owner has converted to diesel with a 1Y engine.
In top gear (ALD box) it can achieve 50mph on the flat but this falls off rapidly if an incline is detected,
Part of the conversion seems to have entailed welding an addition to the throttle lever on the pump (an ECU pump as Hairy Campers).
Looking at the lever, it doesn't touch the slow adjustment but - at idle - is about 3 or 4mm clear.
I can only think that the lever was removed for the welding and replaced incorrectly.
Is there any way I can check the correct placement of this lever?
Any other comments will be gratefully received.
Philip.

I've investigated a bit further now that it's stopped raining and found that the throttle cable is too tight. Removing the connector at the lever allows the throttle lever sit back on the slow running stop. Re-attaching the cable opens the throttle about 3mm but has no effect on the tick-over.
I have some pics but cannot see how to attach them to this post. I'll have to go back to the wiki to educate myself.
It seems that I'll have to work through the basic timings (camshaft and pump) before I cry out again.
Thanks,
Philip.
