CAN bus Subaru Conversion video diary
Hi everyone,
My brother and I are converting our van to Subaru power using a CAN bus EJ25 from a 2004 Legacy. We thought we'd make a video diary series so other people who are thinking about doing a CAN bus conversion can see what's involved and what to expect. I'll post all the videos up in this thread as we make progress on the conversion.
Here's the first one, a quick overview of the project and where we are at the moment.

Anyone know how to embed videos on here?

Will follow with interest
I just completed installing an EJ20 NA out of a manual Legacy into my van - v pleased with result.
Just a week on from install, and chasing out a few issues/gremlins .... but its silky smooth and goes well .
All the best
Matt - Brighton

Thanks Matt.
Part two is online now. Bell housing is fitted.

I'm away this weekend so won't be able to do anything on it. We're going to clean up the engine bay and sort a few crusty bits before the engine goes in. Update soon!

Don't forget the spacer ring on the bearing to stop it rubbing on the flywheel... (I did ) -
In my defence easily done as its only a thin wire ring and not on original assembly
annoying.... having to dis- and re - assemble the clutch.
At least I didn't get far forward before I realised.

Part 3 is up now. Nothing groundbreaking but we thought we'd take the opportunity to clean up the engine bay while access is good.

Re: CAN bus Subaru Conversion video diary
I've had some time off work this week so managed to make a little more progress yesterday.

Should I be concerned about oil pissing out of the rocker when I remove the plug leads?

Re: CAN bus Subaru Conversion video diary
The plug tube seals, and the rocker cover gasket go hard with age, they're pretty much an 'always renew' item. Look for the kit that has those two, plus the rubber seals for the screws that hold the cover down, I think ICP do it.
Those spark plugs could be the original ones what was the mileage on the engine ? Any service-history with it ?
E D I T: Actually I take that back.. that's what a Denso IK20 looks like, its an iridium electrode that's supposed to be 'pointy'.

Re: CAN bus Subaru Conversion video diary
Thanks guys. Good news with the seals, I was going to get a full gasket set anyway.
The car has done 145k. I thought they were supposed to be pointy but one isn't an even point and on the other the central electrode is worn down to a rounded point. Definitely would benefit from a new set whatever though

Slow progress and nothing hugely interesting in part 5. Changed the timing belt and pulleys. Need to source those spark plug tube seals.

Re: CAN bus Subaru Conversion video diary
Hi eddbmxdude
I'm reaching the end of my 2.5 MK4 conversion for my syncro, the engine is now in and am currently creating the under-engine protection bars. Below is a video I made a few months back, since then I've modified the exhaust for an increased departure angle, and the electrics are pretty much finished and sat on the bench awaiting install. It's good to see someone else smashing the current 2004 limit on engine conversions and going CAN!
All the best

Hi J P,
Looks (and sounds) great! I might be pinging some questions your way when I get to the wiring
I've not had any time to work on it recently. I did manage to get some genuine plug tube seals from Ebay though

Re: CAN bus Subaru Conversion video diary
Hi
Just caught up with your progress. Thanks for posting and sharing
What code gearbox have you got ?
Mine is the original 1.6CS gearbox and on the "revvy" side of things at 70/80...... even with my massive 225/80 tyres
Although I like the lower gearing, living as I do in hilly brighton and it jogs up to 60 nicely, when my wallet recovers from the conversion to subaru costs - i will be looking for a taller geared gear-box -
I assume 2.0 /2.1 petrol boxes are the ones to go for and have the higher top gear.
Best
Matt
