You don't need a reader for the error codes, just plug the connectors together that rjes tagged for error code read and turn ignition to first position only, then look at the light that rjes installed and if there is an error, count the long and short flashes.
its a 92 engine with 120k on it - saw it running before i pulled it from the donor car.

the fans kick in when it gets hot so must be warming up at the front? I do need to bleed to properly tho. Ive got two errors, I counted the flashes:
51 - Neutral switch - Abnormal signal entered from neutral switch
51 - Inhibitor switch - Abnormal signal entered from inhibitor switch
33 - Vehicle speed sensor - Abnormal voltage input entered from vehicle speed sensor

now the stat is out the bypass pipe is about 80 deg so 25 deg cooler but sounds like I shouldnt be running it out - Ive def got air in there still though after taking the stat out, I lost about 5l and couldnt get it back in - driveway is on a slope and front was lower than back.

depends on how the rad fan is being controlled, by the Subaru ECU or by the VW radiator temp switch, I don't know which RJES does as default, personally I prefer the radiator to contol the fan but I have a three way swicth set up which means I can choose ECU control, Rad control or manual control

Hi A

The RJES set up uses the ECU to manage the fan(s) directly

Does away with the rad switches completely

So without a stat and a better bleed its now running ok, got it up to temp and the big bottom hose is about 55 deg with the bypass pipe 85 deg, temp gauge just over half way and doesnt go higher. Im happy with that so after the MOT is sorted I can start testing on some longer journeys...
