Darlek cap not connected up.
Jubilee clips used on fuel lines.
Primer pump permanently fitted for some reason.

Good point, the VW I4 engines have a plastic shield to do this job that sits over the camshaft, maybe its been left out on this engine ?

Check the vent is doing its job, otherwise you may have crankcase overpressure forcing oil out in places you don't want it. On the AAZ there's normally a hose about 20mm wide going strainght from the PCV valve to the intake duct.

Once again thanks for the advice - due to work etc I’ve not been able to do much on the van

But on Sunday I’ve started having ago at some of the things suggested...

Replaced PCV as the second I took it off to look at it the insides totally fell out

Oil also seems to be coming out of the dipstick so planning on replacing that this weekend (don’t know how accurate the dipstick is so will do a full oil change)

Also ordered a oil pressure gauge to see how high it is

Planning on looking at re routing the breather from the oil catcher to the intake

Please fire away with any other pointers!!!

PCV shouldn't be stuffed with a wire dishpan scrubber!

Please bear with these stupid questions;
- I’ve looked on the engine block to check which engine it exactly is but I can’t seem to find the code (assumed it was aaz based on advise but wanted to check)
The only coding I could find other than the large 1.9 D/TD was the following any advice?

Also the oil dipstick seems to be pouring with oil - based on reading it seems like the Jx dipstick - is there anyway to get new collars/feed tubes for these to create a better seal?

May be worth tweaking the tube in situ to see if leak stops, it may just need the mounting bracket bending to get it to sit square in the hole

It may be from higher up - If there is a plastic elbow on the breather on the crankcase that is a favourite for disintegrating, I made up a metal one for my 1Y to stop that happening again. (you can see the flat where the engine number should be in the pic also)

Checked all the breather lines and they seem clear - planning on re routing the breather to the intake at some point this week

Thanks again for all your help - considering I’ve got no experience on stuff like this I’ve been getting pretty stuck in thanks to reading on this forum!

So I’ve sorted the oil issues and other issues I’ve come across (Fingers crossed)

But new problem I need advice on - after long runs the clutch has a tendency to judder when pulling off in first! After reading other posts it sounds like its oil getting onto the flywheel maybe the crank seal has gone?

If this is the most likely issue - could someone point me in the direction of how to fix this also would this mean I need to drop the engine or is there anyway of doing the job without removing the engine??

I wonder if the spigot bearing was fitted in the end of the crank. If not, it could be gearbox oil on the clutch. Check gearbox oil level!

More common with cable or mechanical clutch actuators and less so on hydraulic systems is clutch judder due to loose, or broken engine mounts where the biting point varies as the engine moves. Worth a look especially where oil leaks have been.
