I might do a belt n braces and give it some hammerite and waxoyl, can't do any harm....

Its not a long lasting factory like finish, it will weather very quickly and rust, the first one I bought now looks very rusty especially around the welds, it needs painting and protection inside.slowcoach wrote:I think it's an rjes one? it's passivated, so youll be fine

Im giving it a coat of hammerite and molten waxoyl to line the inside
Just can't decide - gloss black / satin black or silver ?

Day 3 Subaru install
Yesterday
I took the diesel tank off - posted the bell housing which i sold via the for sale section here to a member, which has recouped me a few quid toward the £250 (ouch !) its costing to install a petrol 2.1 tank and pipes etc.
The tank strap nuts put up a fight.
Today I'm painting the new tank -, tank straps ,the engine carrier from RJES with hammerite.
tidying the garage is a must (its littered with boxes and bits) -
painting the slave cyl bracketry (mount coming today from Aidian I hope) , the diesel mount won't do for the rues bell housing so I needed a petrol one- - cleaning the subaru engine casings, starter motor and alternator up with wire brushes on drill attachment and gunk....
getting the full rod bush kit / filler neck rubber and, a few other bits from heritage
I just sent RJES Richard a question about heater by pass valve... not sure if i need one or if its in the kit from him
picking up my new gearbox oil - 4 lt. of Gulf GL4 = 80/90 only £20 from Euro Car Parts
So far, after about 3 hours each day for 3 days ..... and I'm on the verge of putting things back together rather than taking bits off
which is why i must do that tidy up before progressing further .
So far... enjoying the process.... toughest part so far was "persuading" the clutch arm to come off the release bearing shaft ..

The heater "bypass valve" is just an H pipe (two 16mm tees) that bridges the heater feed/return and allows return flow when the heater is set to cold.
Best positioned close to the heater valve, if near the engine the flow will always take the shortest path and your heater will be ineffective.

Oh ok - Thanks - I will take a proper look...
There are a few bits in the box I am yet to understand what they are -
Im sure it'll all be clear when i get to each job - its hard to resist trying to understand the whole process bolt by bolt as it were - before lifting a spanner

Hi Matt
Glad it seems to be going OK for you, are you keeping a photo diary as you work? Post some so we can all see progress, don't bother with the state of your garage - I guesss we all have one like that

Im not rushing but admit I'm not doing any photos yet
Got to crack on with the tidy up
I hate working in a mess - finding mis placed tools takes longer than the job itself - and is frustrating when you vcant find something you know you have.
Took me 30 mins to find the clutch release bearing - I had put it "somewhere safe" in the garage ... then forgot
So tidy up and clean up is time well spent
Im not rushing but admit I'm not doing any photos yet

I know exactly what you mean. Constantly lose tools and parts when untidy. Love working in a tidy garage.
Getting the clutch release arm off is hard work. Make sure you put it back on correctly. I put mine on a spline out and clutch wouldn't disengage

Yes - it was a bugger to get off.
I keep losing parts .. drives me nuts. I now can't ind a bit of the harness I took off the engine - the bracket with a few big multi pin connectors ...arrrrgh !!!

Its tidy and clean now - a bit like the F1 Wiliams garage - clinical (not)

Day 4
Lots of cleaning, wire brushing and painting the engine casing and mounts etc,
layed out the harness to see where all and what the multi pin plugs and connections go to... seems straightforward once its in front of you
Found a broken stud in the exhaust header so marinating that in plus gas before attacking it with an "easy out"
Broke the crank sensor trying to remove it for testing (note to self... leave well alone )
Question - what can i paint the zinc engine mount with -
I see hammerite do a special ... straight to galvanised metal ...paint
